Supreme Court Judgement [2025] UKSC 16
On the 16th April 2025, the UK Supreme Court ruled that "sex," "man," and "woman" in the Equality Act 2010 (EA 2010) refer to biological sex, meaning a person's sex at birth, not their gender identity, even if they have a Gender Recognition Certificate (GRC).
Almost immediately, trans+ people and cisgender women across the country started noticing changes. People who had used single-sex toilets in their workplaces for years without issue were suddenly told they could no longer do so. Others were aggressively challenged while using public toilets, or refused access to single-sex spaces based on whether they conformed to a conventional idea of what "men" or "women" should look like. Some were subject to long and degrading investigations, lost their jobs, friends, or family, and many were verbally or physically attacked by members of the public purely based on their appearance.
Like all trans+ people, we've been keeping a very close eye on the situation! ETA started posting key updates, fundraisers for legal action, and specially-created resources soon after the announcement, all of which are shown below. We will continue to update this page for as long as it is needed and welcome any suggestions for inclusion.
